Metro, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is the transportation planner, designer, builder and operator of the Los Angeles County`s transportation system, one of the country’s largest, most populous counties.
With over 93 stations and 105 miles of service, Metro has been constantly expanding its maintenance facilities to meet the growth of the rail system`s operations.
Metro is experiencing exciting growth and expanding their rail service throughout Los Angeles. As such, they’re tasked with making the best use of their existing space for tools, parts and inventory. Their challenge is to expand operations at each maintenance facility over time to support future growth.
Metro’s maintenance facilities are operated by stock clerks who are tasked to quickly find and retrieve parts and tools to distribute to the on-site technicians. Maintaining inventory of the correct parts and tools at each facility is crucial to servicing rail cars.
Eric O’Connor is the senior manager of the logistics group for Metro, his team keeps track of each facilities efficiencies in servicing and maintaining the rail cars, including monitoring on-site inventory. Eric has a long standing relationship with McMurray Stern, the local Modula dealer, and knew he could turn to them for an automated, high density solution to improve the speed of storage and retrieval of parts and tools.
“ Having everything in the right quantity at the right space at the right time… it`s perfect and that`s what we like.” -Eric O’Connor - Senior Manager, Logistics Group Metro
Ultimately, a 20 foot MX50 Vertical Lift with 48 trays, each with a load capacity of 1,102 lbs. was installed in the parts distribution space. The Vertical Lift stores and retrieves more than 960 ft2 of inventory in just 96 ft2 drastically improving picking accuracy and speed.
As Eric O’Connor – Senior Manager, Inventory Management states: “Having everything in the right quantity at the right space at the right time… it`s perfect and that`s what we like”
Additionally, Metro currently funds their expansion projects through sources that require purchases be certified as made in America. Fortunately, Modula vertical lifts are proudly made in the United States, meeting all of the necessary requirements to serve Metro.
